Every year, Pantone releases its choice for the color that will be anxiously reflected in the New Year. For 2020, a familiar and calming shade of azure is on display as Classic Blue
is introduced as the Pantone Color of the Year for 2020.
According to Leatrice Eiseman, Pantone Color Institute executive director, the choice of Classic Blue really aims to provide a stark, calming counter to what could be a very uncertain
short-term future.
“When we look at the world around us, we know that we’re living with a lot of unrest, where some days we don’t feel quite as secure,” Eiseman says. “Blue, from an emotional, psychological standpoint, has always represented a certain amount of calm and dependability. It’s a color that you can rely on.”

Keep in mind, this is not just any blue. Pantone has a vast repertoire of hues and the classic blue is not to be confused with its other shades such as turquoise, blue iris, or cerulean blue.
Darvin Furniture design consultant Juliana Barr says Pantone’s choice of a Classic Blue for 2020 is another indicator that the gradual alignment of traditional decorating styles that she has
seen in recent years is still gaining momentum.
“I think blue has always had the ability to bring together classic design elements,” says Barr. “I love to work with it whenever a client shows interest. I’m guessing with the Pantone choice,
it will be even more popular in 2020.”
Pressman says that Pantone felt that the color resonated dependability, trustworthiness, and credibility, all traits will be valued in the high-stress situations of the current globally
connected world. Pressman points out that the deep blue matches the sky at dusk, providing one reason this color can appeal to so many different people.
