Pantone Declares Ultra Violet ‘Color of the Year’
Much more than a trend, color institute says purple hue is a reflection of our willingness to be braver, bolder and more creative

According to Pantone Color Institute, what’s needed in our world today – is a little Ultra Violet to light the way. Pantone has been choosing a Color of the Year for 19 years and the recognized global authority on all things color says the purple hue, also known as Pantone 10-3838, is the color that will reign supreme this coming year.

Each year Pantone selects a signature color that the institution feels is a “reflection of what’s needed in our world today.” The previous color, Greenery, was a bright, leafy green and, with this year’s hue being Ultra Violet, it would be hard to envision anything being a bolder departure.

According to Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, Ultra Violet is a reflection of our willingness to be braver, bolder and more creative. “This shade is one of nonconformity. People are looking for ways to display creativity,” she says.

Eiseman explains the electrifying blue-based purple is meant to evoke a creative inspiration that represents the era in which we live—one that requires innovation and imagination. “From exploring new technologies and the greater galaxy, to artistic expression and spiritual reflection, intuitive Ultra Violet lights the way to what is yet to come.”

Pantone’s announcement stated that this year’s Color of the Year is nuanced and full of emotion, the depth of Pantone 18-3838 Ultra Violet symbolizes experimentation and non-conformity, spurring individuals to imagine their unique mark on the world, and push boundaries through creative outlets.

“The Pantone Color of the Year has come to mean so much more than ‘what’s trending’ in the world of design; it’s truly a reflection of what’s needed in our world today,” says Laurie Pressman, vice president Pantone Color Institute.

"Whether it's an entire room featuring purple, or simply a purple hue in the pattern of an upholstered chair, or accent pillow, Ultra Violet delivers a bold expression of color that inspires creativity and elevates the imagination,” says Darvin Buyer Jeanie Harrison. "Look for Ultra Violet and similar colors to be assimilated and blended into the latest furniture lines as well as in accessories, lamps, artwork and area rugs."

Pantone makes reference to purple’s unique properties and symbolism with counterculture, unconventionality, and artistic brilliance. Musical icons Prince, David Bowie and Jimi Hendrix brought shades of Ultra Violet to the forefront of western pop culture as personal expressions of individuality.

The complete depth of Pantone 18-3838 Ultra Violet’s ability to leave its mark on the world can only be truly appreciated once the artists and creative outlets deliver their interpretations.
